Brielle Designs Artistic Switch Plates
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) About Switchplate Covers

How can I find matching or similar designs if I want to order a single toggle plate and an outlet plate of the same design?

Our hand-painted plates are one-of-a-kind so no two plates will be identical.  We do, however, provide design ID numbers in most of our plate descriptions for those interested in purchasing matching or similar plates.  So if you'd like to purchase a single toggle plate in design code A05 and want an outlet plate to match, you can scan down the descriptions of the outlet plates until you find the code A05.

If I see a switchplate I like but need it in a different configuration or would like additional switchplates to match, can I place a special order?

In most cases, we can closely duplicate or make additional switchplates in a variety of configurations (e.g., if you see a single toggle switchplate you like but need it in a double toggle configuration we can most likely accommodate your request).  Please inquire by email or phone.

How durable are your switchplates since they involve hand-painted paper?

We finish each switchplate with a tough European varnish that creates a durable UV (ultraviolet), stain, and water resistant surface.  We use the same varnish on tables that we build and embellish.  We have done extensive testing with this varnish to ensure that our tabletops are durable.  Even with balsalmic vinegar and red wine left overnight on our tabletops, the varnish is entirely unaffected.  It's really quite remarkable.

Do your switchplates hold up well in a bathroom given we take steamy showers?

 Absolutely.

What are the dimensions of your switchplates?

Switchplates come in three sizes: standard, mid-sized, and oversized.  The plates on our website are all standard sizes.  If you need mid-sized or oversized plates, please contact us for a custom order.  The dimensions of the three sizes are as follows:

How do I install my switchplates?

It's as easy as unscrewing your old plate and screwing in your new one.  It shouldn't take more than a minute or so!

How do I clean my switchplates?

Wipe clean with a damp cloth or sponge.

My electrician cut a hole too big to be covered by a standard switchplate.  What can I do?

We can obtain midsized and oversized plates from our electrical supplier if you're interested in custom ordering a switchplate in these larger sizes (see dimensions above).  Pricing will vary from the standard sized plates listed on the website.

What about the unsightly plastic toggle, outlet, or rocker that comes through once I install my switchplates?

Some people are bothered by this.  It's true that a fabulous decorative switchplate can look wonderful off the wall, but can loose some of its appeal once installed because of the plastic that shows through.  If you are bothered by this we suggested the following: 1) Remove your switchplate and tape newspaper around the electrical opening to protect your walls.  2) Spray the plastic toggle with a plastic spray primer that can be found at hardware stores.  Let dry.  3) Spray paint the plastic with a color that compliments your switchplate. Metallic spray paint would be wonderful.  Apply several light coats.  Let dry.  4) Apply a few coats of spray varnish.  Let dry.  5) Install your switchplate and admire the results.

I live in an home with switchplates of unusual sizes.  Can you accommodate orders for switchplate sizes that are very hard to find?

If you have non-standard switchplate sizes, you can send us your plates and specify the item number(s) in our catalog that you want your plates to look like.  Please inquire by email or phone.

How can I see your switchplates in person?

If you live in the Pacific Northwest, you can visit us at an art show.  Please see our 2008 upcoming show schedule.    We typically bring ~1,000 plates to art shows so you'll have lots of choices.

If you live in the Puget Sound area or are visiting, we're happy to open our studio by appointment if you'd like to peruse our current inventory.  Call 206-632-5953 or email info@brielledesigns.com to set up an appointment.

 Who makes these switchplates?

Brielle Designs' co-owners and sisters, Ellen and Susan Busteed, make all the plates.  We do not subcontract out any of the work....we are intentionally keeping our business small so we can ensure quality and artistic integrity.
